How to Choose a Wedding Venue: 14 Essential Tips for Brides

Jan 31, 2025

So, You’re Engaged—Congratulations! Now, Let’s Talk Wedding Venues.

You’re engaged—what an exciting time! Your head is probably spinning with all the things to plan, but before diving into the details, take a moment to soak it all in. Celebrate with your fiancé, pop some champagne, and enjoy this special chapter!

Once you’re ready to start planning, one of the first (and biggest) decisions you’ll make is choosing a wedding venue. It’s more than just a beautiful space—it affects everything from logistics to lighting, guest experience, and your overall wedding-day vibe. To help make your search easier, I’ve put together a list of important (and sometimes unexpected) things to consider. Let’s dive in!

Set Your Budget First

Venues can quickly eat up a big portion of your budget, so decide early on how much you’re willing to spend—including venue fees, catering minimums, and extras like rentals.

Consider Your Guest Count

Make sure the venue can comfortably accommodate your guest list. Too big, and it may feel empty; too small, and your guests may feel cramped.

Ask About What’s Included

Some venues provide tables, chairs, and linens, while others require you to rent everything separately. Ask what’s included to avoid unexpected costs.

Think About Convenience & Location

Is the venue easy for guests to get to? If you have out-of-town guests, consider proximity to hotels and transportation options.

Plan for Getting Ready & Pre-Ceremony Photos

Does the venue have separate, well-lit getting-ready spaces for both of you? If you plan to do pre-ceremony photos, is there enough space for both the bride and groom to take photos without seeing each other?

Check for Backup Plans

If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony or reception, ask about backup options in case of bad weather.

Look at the Photo Opportunities

Beautiful backdrops make for stunning wedding photos! Consider the venue’s natural light, architecture, and surrounding scenery. Also, ask if there are shaded areas for outdoor portraits—harsh midday sun isn’t ideal for photos!

Think About Sunset Timing

If you dream of golden hour photos, check what time the sun will set on your wedding day and whether your venue has a good spot for those dreamy, glowing portraits.

Ask About Vendor Restrictions

Some venues require you to use their preferred vendors, while others allow you to bring in your own. Make sure their policies align with your vision.

Consider the Flow & Layout

Think about how guests will move through the space—from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception—to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Bonus: A venue with multiple picturesque spots nearby can help keep your photo session efficient and stress-free!

And just a few more that are a little less obvious…

Hidden Distractions in the Background

Look beyond the immediate beauty—what’s in the background of key photo locations? Avoid power lines, parking lots, or signage that could interfere with stunning shots.

Guest Sightlines & Experience During Key Moments

Are there any columns or obstructions blocking the view? Will guests have to turn awkwardly to see the first dance? A great venue allows everyone to feel included in the moments that matter.

Noise Pollution & Unexpected Sounds

Is the venue near a highway, train track, or airport? Will neighboring events or city noise disrupt your ceremony or speeches? Unexpected sound issues can impact guest experience and video recordings.

Trust Your Gut

If a venue feels right and you can picture yourself getting married there, that’s a good sign! Choose a place that fits your vision, budget, and overall wedding vibe.
